Since the day it became official, all Turkey can talk and think about is the upcoming elections that will take place in June 24.
Turkey’s main opposition party CHP (Republican People’s Party nominated an ex-high school physics teacher Muharrem Ince as its candidate in the snap presidential election.
Ince has been named as an "inclusive candidate" as he stated “I will be everyone’s president, a non-partisan president.”
His statements on the Kurdish issue has been affirmative as he stated that there needs to be solid steps taken to end the conflict that has been going on for 40 years.
He gave a lengthy interview to BBC Türkçe last week and in the interview he talked about his perspective on how to solve the Kurdish issue.
For the interview click here.
With this post we start to trace first what he has stated and aim to build on his later statements to create a profile in his perspective on the Kurdish issue.
So, in a nutshell he has stated that the Kurdish issue will be solved in 3 "brave steps."
First, sincerely. Secondly, in parliament (with reference to secrecy and ambiguity that was present in the AKP led process). Thirdly, without lies.
He also added on the issue of CHP's and Kılıçdaroğlu's backings of the immunity bill that led to the imprisonment of MPs from HDP and one MP from CHP. He said that:
"I fell apart with my party on the issue of immunity. I did what I believed in. I did not take that stance to make the Kurds happy. You see, politics is about principles. I have to do the right thing."
İnce has also called for HDP candidate Demirtaş to be released from prison to honours a "just race" which has been a call that was not carried out by many of the actors in Turkish politics today.
To end, our view on his statements on the Kurdish question is positive as he underlines an inclusive agenda where he puts the Kurdish question as an issue that needs consensual resolution. Time will tell whether he will have the chance to carry out these perspectives and as he stated whether he is "sincere."
